Resources for Islamic School Educators (RISE) respects your privacy and provides this platform under the following Privacy Policy and Terms of Use. The Foundation for Inspiring Hopefulness is a separate nonprofit organisation with its own services.

Privacy Policy

Information We Collect and How We Use It

When you submit a resource or write to us, we collect the name, email address and content you provide to review your submission or respond to your request. When you subscribe to the RISE newsletter, we use your email address to send updates about publications, educational resources and new content. Writing to us or submitting a resource does not by itself subscribe you to marketing emails.

Accounts and Course Data

Our online courses are taken through a signed-in learning portal. When you create an account, sign-in is handled by our authentication provider, Clerk, which stores your name, email address, and sign-in credentials on our behalf. We do not store passwords ourselves, and we do not use course activity for advertising.

On our own systems, keyed to your account, we store:

• Which courses you are enrolled in, and when you enrolled.
• Which slides you have reached and which lessons you have completed, so the portal can pick up where you left off.
• Your score on any milestone check, chapter paper or course exam you sit, whether you passed, and how long you took.
• On a chapter paper, the written answers you typed in your own words, together with the marks and any written feedback the teacher marking it gave you.
• The role you told us you have, if you answered when the portal asked: educator, student, homeschool, parent or other.
• If you are in a class, or assigned to a particular teacher, that membership.
• If your school has been matched to the portal by its email domain, the email address you signed in with, so the right school is recognised.

Anything you write to us through a form on this site, or post on the feature board inside the portal, is also stored, along with the name and email address you typed into it.

You may request deletion of your account, your enrolments and your learning records at any time through our Connect page, and we will remove them from both our systems and our authentication provider. A post on the portal's public feature board is the one exception: other readers may be replying to it, so it stays unless you ask us to remove that as well. Ask, and we will.

Children and Student Accounts

Some of the people using the learning portal are children, and this section says what that means rather than leaving it to be inferred.

The portal has a student role. A school can put pupils on it, place them in a class, assign them to a particular teacher, and set a limit on how far ahead a pupil may read. A pupil answers chapter papers in the portal and a teacher marks them, including the written answers the pupil typed.

What we hold about a pupil is what the list above describes: the email address they signed in with, a name if one was given, which slides they reached, which lessons they completed, their marks on any paper they sat, the written answers they typed together with the teacher's marks and feedback, and which class and which teacher they are attached to. There is no field for a photograph, a medical note, a safeguarding note or a behaviour note, and teachers should not try to record one anywhere in the portal.

Who can see it: the teacher that pupil is assigned to, that teacher's head of department, and RISE staff. A teacher sees the pupils assigned to them and no others. A pupil sees their own work and nobody else's.

A pupil cannot close their own account. An account a school set up is the school's to close, and a pupil who could close it mid-term would destroy their own record. A school, a parent or a guardian can ask us to close it through our Connect page, giving the email address the account uses, and we will confirm in writing when it is done. We will not ask the child for anything further and we will not use the request to contact them.

Qur'an Adventure (quranadventure.com) is the RISE service most likely to be used by a child on their own. It runs on separate infrastructure with a separate sign-in and has its own privacy policy. Nothing in this document describes what it collects; do not rely on this page when deciding whether a child may play it.

Who Else Handles Your Data

These are the organisations besides us that handle any part of this data, and there are no others.

• Clerk provides sign-in. It holds your email address, your name if you gave one, your credentials and your session records. Clerk's sign-in code is fetched from Clerk and runs in your browser on every page of the portal, so your IP address and browser reach Clerk whether or not you sign in.
• Hostinger provides the server everything else runs on. The database, the API and the web server are on infrastructure we rent from them and administer ourselves. They do not process the data for any purpose of their own.
• YouTube (Google) hosts the video some lessons offer. The preview picture on each video card is a copy stored on our own server, so nothing loads from YouTube until you click to play one: no image, no script, nothing. When you do, the video plays through youtube-nocookie.com and at that moment your IP address, your browser and the identity of the video reach Google. If you never press play, Google learns nothing.
  YouTube may show an advertisement before or during that video, and we cannot turn it off. We sell no advertising, we have no advertisers, we receive nothing for it and nothing about you is used to choose it. But the embed is a standard YouTube player, and youtube-nocookie.com limits tracking rather than advertising. If that matters for your classroom, play the clip through once before the lesson.
• Resend delivers the message when you write to us through a form. Your name, your email address and what you wrote pass through it on the way to our inbox. Nothing about your courses does.
• Listmonk runs the newsletter list. We host it ourselves on a server we administer, so it is not a vendor holding your data, but it is a separate machine and it is named here for that reason. It holds a subscriber's email address and nothing else.

We use no analytics vendor, no advertising network and no customer data platform anywhere, and there is no advertising cookie or tracking pixel. The portal counts how it is used, on our own server: how many lessons are taught, how long visits last, and where something failed to load. It records nothing about who did anything. No account, IP address, cookie or device identifier is kept with those counts; teachers and pupils are counted only as groups, and a group smaller than five is never shown. Turning on Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track in your browser switches the counting off. When a teacher links a YouTube video in a class bulletin, we count that video for the course and school year, so that popular videos can be added to the course's own resources. The one advertising a reader can encounter is YouTube's own, described above, which we neither sell nor control. We may disclose data if the law requires it, or to protect the service or someone's safety, and if we are legally able to tell you first we will.

Where Your Information Is Kept

The learning portal, its database and the files it serves run on a server we administer, hosted by Hostinger in Boston, Massachusetts, in the United States. Sign-in is provided by Clerk, which hosts its data in the United States. Information stored in the United States may be subject to the laws of the United States. Newsletter and Marketing Consent

Subscribing to the RISE newsletter requests updates from Resources for Islamic School Educators, including its Qur'an Adventure games. It does not subscribe you to the Foundation for Inspiring Hopefulness newsletter. The Foundation is a separate nonprofit organisation; receiving its newsletter requires a separate subscription. We do not sell, rent or trade your information to unaffiliated third parties.

Opting Out

You have the right to withdraw your newsletter consent at any time. Every newsletter we send includes an "Unsubscribe" link. Follow that link to withdraw your newsletter consent, or contact us if you need help with your subscriptions.

Terms of Use

Platform Nature and Hosted Content

The Resources for Islamic School Educators (RISE) website acts as a hosting platform and directory for various educational resources, curricula, and external links. Please note that other people's works and third-party materials may be hosted or linked on this platform.

Specific Work Terms and Licensing

Because we host a variety of materials from different authors and creators, the overall platform Terms of Use do not comprehensively cover the specific rights, licenses, and full permitted uses of every individual work. In order to understand the permitted uses, copyright, and licensing restrictions of a specific work, you must look at the terms provided within or alongside that specific work itself, rather than relying on the generic platform terms.

Assessment Materials Are Confidential

Some accounts can see what a student account is deliberately not served: answer keys, marking guides, the sample full-mark answer and the band descriptors behind a rubric, and the questions themselves — milestone checks, chapter papers, course exams, supplementary and bonus questions, and vetted examination questions. The Verified Educator and Head of Department accounts are the accounts that open them, and an institutional licence is what creates those accounts.

Holding such an account is your agreement to keep every one of those materials confidential. That agreement binds you personally, it is a condition of the account, and it is not waived by anything a colleague, a school or a principal tells you. Specifically, you must not:

• Distribute, publish, post, upload, sell, or otherwise release any of it, in any form, to anyone — including your students, their parents, colleagues at your school who do not hold a verified account of their own, educators at other institutions, and the public.
• Copy, photograph, screenshot, print, export, or transcribe it for any purpose beyond teaching and marking the students assigned to you.
• Tell a student, or anyone else, what an answer is, or reproduce a question, an answer key or a mark scheme in your own revision sheets, practice papers, classroom slides or any other material — including material you give away for free.
• Enter any of it into a third-party service, including a public AI assistant. Doing so is a release, whatever the intention behind it.
• Share your sign-in, or let anyone else reach the material through your account.

This is not a formality. A vetted examination question is worth something only for as long as the students sitting it have not seen it, and one leaked answer key ends the usefulness of that assessment for every school in the catalogue, not only yours. A Head of Department who verifies a teacher is vouching for that teacher's compliance with this section as much as for their fitness to teach, and an institution is answerable for releases made from the accounts it verified.

The obligation outlives the account. It continues after you leave the institution, after the account is closed, and after the institution's licence lapses or is not renewed. Where we have reason to believe assessment material has been released, we may suspend or revoke the account, and where the release is attributable to an institution we may suspend or revoke that institution's licence, in either case without refund. Nothing in this section limits the copyright in the material or any remedy otherwise available to us or to the author of the work.

RISE provides this platform on an "as is" and "as available" basis. We make no warranties, expressed or implied, regarding the accuracy, completeness, or suitability of the hosted content for any particular purpose. The responsibility for the content and adherence to copyright lies with the respective authors and contributors.
